Sports Comment: Stanford women win, men lose

As mentioned a couple days ago, the Stanford women's and men's basketball teams played in the Sweet Sixteen this weekend.

The women's game, versus Pitt, was a close, tough game until about 10 minutes were left. Stanford's inside game was doing well, but Pitt's guards were hitting jumpers like crazy. All of a sudden, Candice Wiggins decided to start playing, the Pitt guards (Winn and the excellent Zellous) stopped, and it was all over. The next game against Maryland should also be super-tough as they are a rock-solid team both inside and outside.

The men's game, against Texas, was also close for the first thirty minutes but the writing was on the wall from the beginning. All Stanford had going was the Lopez brothers down low (especially Brook), but Texas had both low-post people and some slashing, shooting guards. Stanford got within one point in the second half, but then Texas poured it on.

So I'll have to tape the Stanford-Maryland game tomorrow night as I'll be at rock climbing club. Go Stanford!!
