Q: to staple or not to staple? (manuscript submission)

Dear Miss Writerly Manners as expressed in the LJ hivemind,

I am uncertain as to whether it's more proper to staple or paperclip my manuscript submissions.

Stapling ensures the pages stay together. However, when a manuscript comes back and the editor has (very kindly) not written on it so it may be submitted elsewhere, then the pages can look worn around the staple.

Paperclipping helps the manuscript look cleaner, but increases the risk that a page may get lost. Also, big stories need honking big paper clips.

I have seen various net guidelines saying "staple" and saying "don't staple".

What are your thoughts??
