let's install software, all day long!

I have a bug, just recently uncovered, in a software component I own. Said bug only occurs on MS Vista. I think I know what it is, but I need to confirm. So, I need to install Visual Studio 2005 Professional on my Vista test client. You'd think this would be easy.

All we have available internally are ISO images for the VSPro 2005 install CDs. So I need to get the images from the server. It is an *incredibly* *slow* server with download speeds of approximately 60KB/sec. Where is it, in someone's house on a cheap DSL line? Getting CD images takes a large chunk of time.

Now I have to mount the ISO images. Oh hey, the image mounter I have doesn't work on Vista. Well, surely there's another one. Hmmm, not really or I'd have to buy one. Buying software inside this company is a long and complicated process of IT cost containment where the following assumption is made: You don't actually need the software, do you?

So, I find a freeware program to burn disks from ISO images (heaven forfend this actually be a standard part of Windows) and install it. Please don't tell IT I installed non-standard software, okay? Burning CDs takes forever.

Now I can install VS Pro. It takes three attempt to learn the proper CD juggling sequence. Yay! It's installed! But, it needs updates to run correctly on Windows. Find and install the updates. Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock goes the clock.

We're almost there. Run Visual Studio 2005. Oh wait, I should really be an administrator to run development software. This is a test machine and I'm not the administator. That's my current dilemma.

This has taken me a good part of yesterday and today. Good thing I don't like have any *real* work to do.
