[writing] sometimes, the good news fairy carries a baseball bat

Subtitled: "So how's that writing stuff going anyway, Jeff?"

Like most people who put work out there in the world, I have a Google Search for my name. Yesterday it turned up something interesting, specifically the announcement of the nominees for the 2010 Small Press Awards (given by the Washington SF Association at their Capclave convention).

Here's the announcement. Summary: My story "The Very Difficult Diwali of Sub-Inspector Gurushankar Rajaram" (published in DayBreak Magazine last year) is one of eight stories nominated for the 2010 Small Press Awards.

Wow. It's quite a list, with many famous people on it and many good stories. I'm a little stunned and very honored at the inclusion of my goofy story.

I'm especially stunned because in the last six months, I've done virtually no writing. Work has been chewing up a lot of my time and energy and creativity and what's left goes to family and footy (Australian Rules Football). Also, I was becoming rather dissatisfied with the state of my writing at the end of 2009 and that made going into the current lull even easier.

But this news just goes to show me: It doesn't seem that writing is done with me yet. And the Good News Fairy is here with a baseball bat to remind me of that fact. I'm not sure when I'll be back to writing, full steam and trying to get better, but it will happen one day. Something might have to give for me to have the energy to put back into writing. But eventually...

In the meantime, thanks to the Good News Fairy and to the nice folks of WSFA for the reminder.
