Cary Tennis goes on a bit long (he sometimes does), but I think his advice sounds solid: Learn to enjoy the slush pile.
In my opinion, I'd think it could be a real educational experience because it could show you ways in which things don't work or some ways in which they do. It's like doing critiquing, but on a larger scale. Not that I'm volunteering to do slush pile reading, but I sure it could be a good experience.
