five links for evening perusing

Woman eyes skydive record over Everest (from Reuters: Oddly Enough). She'll get dropped off 450 feet above the top and land at 13,000 feet. Another person doing something so I don't have to, and I thank her for it.

Putin saves TV crew from Siberian tiger (from Reuters). Raising the bar for world leaders around the globe. Certainly McCain/Bush/Obama are thinking "Dang! Why didn't *I* think of that!", but Sarah Palin is thinking "Tiger, pshaw - how about a moose?"

The Large Hadron Collider Rap (via sartorias). Extremely catchy, and educational! Perhaps this is the Schoolhouse Rock of the new generation.

Theocratic Sect Prays for Real Armageddon (AlterNet, via lilithsaintcrow). A long article on hard-core Christian dominionists. Wild, scary stuff, also useful for various kinds of world-building.

McCain's World (at NARAL gives information about McCain's opinions and actions on various subjects such as reproductive choice. The email I receved with the link said "What would life be like in McCain's world?" and I thought it might be an interesting look at a world based on political attitudes, using the tool of speculative fiction. Alas, it wasn't. But the idea of short fiction speculative stories being used for political ends is an interesting concept burning in my mind. Maybe NARAL should cast about for some writers who want to join on...
