if you're not reading George Orwell's blog, you should be

It's the diaries of George Orwell, from 70 years ago, on wordpress and put into an RSS feed that you can add to your LJ friends.

Today's entry reviewed simple, yet remarkably efficient, lathes used by Jewish chair makers.

It also contained this quote:

"The superstition that it is lucky to touch a hunchback apparently obtains among the Arabs as well."

That's like an entire world for a short story, right there.
