On the up side, it was a very enjoyable movie. Appealing lead character, uplifting story line (eventually, though not without its dark moments), and a well-structured presentation. The street scenes of Mumbai and India were just mind-blowing, bringing the knowledge that this is most likely the character of the city, one I must visit one day. Really, an amazing movie to watch visually and a lead for whom you really want to cheer. I will also definitely get the soundtrack.
On the down side, once I heard the plot summary I knew exactly how the movie was going to be structured. So there were no surprises as it played out. Also I really wish that Latika had been the one to know the answer to the final question, because then she would have been more than just the pretty girl who the hero dreamed about and would periodically (and finally) rescue. It would have given her a little more depth, you know, than just a prize to be won.
But overall, I rather enjoyed watching the movie and would recommend it. It's no surprise that it did well at the Golden Globes, and I'm sure it will have its moments at the Oscars. Also, given the near-full theatre where I saw it it will also have some American success.
