TV Comment: LOST, season 5, episode 8

Season 5, Episode 8

At long last, the "Canadian Hockey Player" episode of LOST is here.

Four-Toed Statue FTW! Alas, it was just a brief interval. And the well is full of rocks. What we don't know is when the Oceanic 6 arrives on the island.

Horace is Horace Goodspeed, but who is LeFleur? These are Dharma guys in the past. LeFleur is Sawyer. So the Islandies were also on the island for 3 years? I'm actually a little bummed by this, as I had hoped that what was three years for the Oceanic 6 would end up being a couple weeks for the Islandies.

Amy and Paul. Whose parents are they? Charlotte's, perhaps?

Charlotte's body didn't come along with the jump, which was what I assumed would happen.

We can assume that where they are in time, is where the LOSTies eventually landed?

The logical, yet totally illogical, question for the Island folks to ask the woman they saved is: What year is it? Juliet figured out it’s the 70s. Juliet is smart like that.

Interesting mention of "the truce". Oh look, there's the fence. And Amy knows the fence secrets.

Juliet, working on the van, with a grinder. Gotta love her.

Baby is not Charlotte. There's Charlotte, as a little kid. This time explains Charlotte mentioning some crazy guy talking to her, and also explains Daniel being in the cave near the power source (as seen in the Pierre Chang flashback).

I wonder if Widmore is on the island, because based on what he said to Locke he was on the island for 30 years from mid-50s to mid-80s. But if Widmore is on the island, then he's with the Others and maybe we get to see when Ben "tricks" him into leaving the island. Not this episode, but eventually?

Nice work by Sawyer to mention the Black Rock as part of his cover.

Guy with the torch? Richard Alpert. I was wondering when he would show up.

Sawyer is going to do a total freakout on Richard, because that's really the only thing you can do with Richard is show him that you know more than he might ever expect you know.

Sawyer looks like a muppet with that beard.

Surely this episode is going to end with them meeting up with the Oceanic 6. But how? There's been no more jumps. There has to be some sort of event. Doesn't there?

Sawyer and Juliet? Nooooooooooo! Understandable, but Nooooooooo!!!

We see the theme of this episode here: Three years, is that enough to get over someone? You might not remember what she looks like Sawyer, but soon you will.

The call must be from Jin, saying he found the Oceanic 6. Of course, as always happens on LOST, no one tells each other anything. Sawyer doesn't tell Juliet about Jin's discovery. So Sawyer is going to see the Oceanic 6, and especially Kate.

And he does. But how did they get there? We saw the Oceanic 6 get back via some sort of event. Where was the event?

Overall: I liked this episode because it settled into character and how they changed during the time on the island. At first I wasn't a fan of the "stuck in the past for 3 years" situation, but I grew to like it because it moved the characters forward and created tension for the eventual arrival of the Oceanic 6. The only thing I didn't like was that there was no event that brought the Oceanic 6 back, when we clearly saw an event from the POV of the plane. Of course, there wasn't an event that brought Flight 815 to the island, was there (I can't remember right now)?

The big thing here is that all the LOSTies are now in the past. Way in the past. Surely some of them ended up with the Others. How this all resolves in coming weeks will be interesting. And what could be the big season-ending twist? Perhaps the island getting back to the present. And Widmore coming back? I must say that I’m pretty amazed we're only *halfway* through this season. Halfway!
