Sci Fi Channel Aims to Shed Geeky Image With New Name.

"SyFy"? Really? "SyFy"?!?!

Well, the world was looking for a name that would represent such classics of the SF/F field as "Mansquito", "Anaconda vs Crocodile", and "Grizzly Rage". I guess they found it.

ETA: fixed link.

But you see, they don't want to be Sci-Fi, they want to be ... to be ... something else. Something less sci-fi.

In further news, MANSQUITO is now called MAHNSKWEETOH. Just in case you were wondering.

a truly imaginative name that captures what the future vision of what they are trying to become

"But, but, that's what SYFY, the name, does!"

BTW, they'll be spelling it with all caps because then it captures that edgy, internet, chat room feel. Maybe they'll get a twitter account, and post pictures on Flickr next. And a blog.

This sort of thing makes me glad I don't pay for cable. As a writer, editor, and consumer of science fiction, I feel extremely insulted by statements made in that article. Sigh. (Your link's broken, btw. You're missing an "h" in your "href.")

Agreed. I'm reading the article and thinking "dude, do you even *like* science fiction, SF, or sci-fi?"

Link fixed - thanks!

The SF literary community poos all over the name Sci Fi anyway, so maybe it's just their way of giving the finger back. Just imagine if people start referring to SF books as SyFy. Reap what you sow, I say. :)

Maybe this will be the thing that at long last unites the SF and sci-fi communities: mutual hatred of SyFy.

Together again, at last!

At least until the next round of "Which *Is* The One True Science Fiction?" starts up again...

How do such contingencies so miss the memo on things like that "Y replacing I 4tehCOOL is over" anyway? Isn't SF information-obsessed and futuristic?

Oh, nerd-dom. Never leave me.
How else could I get my deeply ironic laughs?

I'm not even sure that most of the folks at Sci-Fi channel qualify for SF/F nerddom, given stuff like MANSQUITO and GRIZZLY RAGE.

BSG, and Doctor Who, are the notable exceptions. But they aren't really related to Sci-Fi channel beyond being shown there.

I can't wait to see what kind of programming they come up with! I'm sure it will be smart and edgy, just like the new name!
