The Manahatta Project is an extremely interesting reconstruction of Manhattan Island in 1609 - terrain, plants, animals, etc. If you've an interest in the world back when it was more natural, or want to do some research for a story set in older times this is a great website. There's a nice article in National Geographic about the effort.
