urban fantasy covers, in a nutshell
Cute video by scifiguy, found via io9.

It's funny because it's true. Lou Anders laughed about this during his coffee chat at Orycon, saying "it's what sells". Hey Lou, maybe it sells because it's the ONLY COVER STYLE OUT THERE.

At least it looks like recent trends actually have the cover subject (always a woman) facing the reader. Of course, half the time they cut off her head/face.

It's true, it's true, it's true!! But you know what...I'd be so darned happy to have my book published, I'd probably love to see a moon, a tatoo and a cool weapon on my cover!! LOL

That's right. Even if it's a cover like every other cover, the big difference is it has *your* name on it and *your* story in it!

I could see it working both for and against. For you, it's a negative: "I'm tired of books like that". For someone else, it might be a positive: "Hey, another book like that." As you said, the author doesn't control the cover. In the end, it's all about shelf appeal and marketing.

If one assumes the publishers know what they're doing. We all wonder, sometime.

I get the sense that many media companies work like Hollywood: "That worked before, so it will work again. And forever!" At least until something new works, then everyone copies that.

One of these days, they'll all learn. Maybe.

Until then: more backs, tats, and weapons!
